Two politicians may face 20 years in prison over rice subsidy bribery charge

ALOR STAR: Two politicians claimed trial at the Alor Star Sessions Court here today to three counts of bribery amounting to RM135,000 last year.

One of the accused, Nor Azamuddin Ahmad, 47, was alleged to have accepted bribery of RM45,000 on May 4, June 6, and July respectively at about 10pm at Persiaran KTC 4/3, Kulim Techno City Golf View, Kulim Hi-Tech Park, Kulim from an entrepreneur Datuk Noridan Spee Yee, 56.

According to the charge sheet, the bribery was an inducement for him to get a quota of 100 tonne metric of subsidised Super Tempatan 15 (ST15) rice from the Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Ministry for MNS Utara Entreprise and MFM Utara Entrepreprise for the month of May, June and July.

The second accused, Farid Idris Khan, 36, who had allegedly conspired with Azamuddin, is also facing the same charges.

Both the accused, who run a company, are charged under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 which is read together with Section 28 of the same act that carries a jail term of not more than 20 years and a fine not less than five times the total sum of the bribery accepted.

Judge Zulhazmi Abdullah fixed May 5 for mention and set RM8,000 bail with one surety for each charge for both of the accused.

The prosecution was conducted by A Hafiizh Abu Bakar, while the duo were represented by Ang Chun Pun.
