Gunman dies in pre-dawn shootout with police in Alor Star

ALOR STAR: Police shot dead a gunman who had opened fire on police, and seized a gun together with a hand grenade in a shootout at Taman Rakyat here this morning.

In the 4.10am incident, police also discovered syabu, Eramin 5 and yaba pills in the man's possession.

State deputy police chief Datuk Abd Jalil Hassan said prior to the incident, police had spotted the man in a car near a bank in Taman Rakyat, and had asked him to pull over.

However, he said, the man refused to cooperate and sped off towards the Taman Rakyat Mosque direction.

During the car chase, the man hit a patrol car before firing three shots towards police, forcing the police to fire back in retaliation.

"The man lost control of his vehicle and crash into a tree.

"He died on the spot and upon further inspection on the suspect's car, police discovered various types of drugs, a Smith and Wesson pistol, three bullets, three bullet shells and a hand grenade.

"We have yet identify the man, who is believed to be a local, following the absence of identification documents at the scene," he said when met here today.
