Arrested suspected KLIA gunman planned escape to Thailand, police say

KOTA BARU: Police believe that the suspected gunman in the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) shooting incident was enroute to Thailand when he was arrested here, yesterday.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said police also suspected the man would cross the Malaysian-Thai border to continue his escape to other countries via Thailand.

"We believe the suspect was planning to leave the country when he was arrested in front of a private hospital here yesterday.

"We are still establishing which route he was planning to take or how he wanted to leave the country but there is a possibility he will cross the (Malaysia-Thai) border first.

"After arresting him, we have seized a Glock pistol, some cash of both Thai and Arab Saudi currencies and bullets.

"Also seized from the suspect were an international passport and a packet of 'bola mercun' (fireball), a type of firecracker, as well as a car– a Honda Civic– and four identification cards belonging to several individuals," he told a press conference here today.

Shuhaily said initial investigation showed that the suspect had arrived in Kelantan after Asar prayers on April 14.

"He had rented a hotel in Kota Baru and registered using another person's name. During the arrest, he first refused to cooperate but police later managed to apprehend him," he added.
