Hiker dies during Gunung Berembun climb

CAMERON HIGHLANDS: A 41-year-old hiker died after suffering a heart attack while climbing Gunung Berembun near Cameron Highlands yesterday.

The deceased, identified as Saiful Anuar Ahmad Rafie from Hutang Melintang, started his journey with five relatives including his 12-year-old daughter at about 10.45am from Tanah Rata.

Cameron Highland Police Chief Deputy Superintendent Zainal Abidin Othman said the deceased suddenly collapsed when the group arrived at the peak around 2.30pm.

"The deceased's daughter contacted her mother who was at the bottom of the mountain and informed the emergency rescue team.

"A rescue team consisting of eight firefighters and three volunteers started to climb at 4pm and arrived about two hour later.

"The team tried to give first aid emergency treatment. However he was pronounce dead at the scene," Zainal Abidin said when contacted today.

He said the case is being classified as sudden death.

The deceased's body was sent to Hospital Sultanah Hajjah Kalsom for postmorterm.
