52 gold target for Sukma by Terengganu

HULU TERENGGANU: Cycling, athletics and archery will lead Terengganu’s charge to bag 52 gold medals at the 18th Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Sarawak on July 22-31.

State Youth, Sports and Human Resources Committee chairman Datuk Rozi Mamat said Terengganu wanted to wrest back the overall title it last won in 2012, after being overall champions for four consecutive years since 2008.

“With proper commitment and stringent training, we are confident of achieving these targets, despite two of our favourite events, judo and canoeing, not being contested at the games,” he said at close of the Sukma gold target camp at the Malaysian Building Academy in Janagor.

Terengganu will send a 197-athlete contingent to Sukma.

Rozi said the three months’ arrears in the state’s athletes’ training allowance, totalling RM468,000, would be settled later this month following a downturn in the economy.

Each state athlete is eligible for a RM390 monthly allowance.
