WhatsApp messages slamming MACC are fake, says Penang police chief

GEORGE TOWN: Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Ghafar Rajab today dismissed as fake WhatsApp messages which supposedly slammed the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Abdul Ghafar said the two sets of messages in Bahasa Malaysia were fabricated and did not originate from Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

"The country's top cop has never uttered any negative words against MACC.

"The messages which alleged that Khalid was upset with MACC were completely false and baseless," he said.

Abdul Ghafar said the messages had circulated widely after four policemen and one policewoman were detained in anti-graft investigations on Saturday.

The false messages prompted Abdul Ghafar to clarify the matter in a press conference here today.

He said the MACC officials involved in the the operations had followed their standard operating procedures to pick up the five rank and file police personnel on duty from the Air Itam police station.

"There has been lot of misreporting from the media. The MACC officials arrived at the station with proper documentation.

"The police have been maintaining a good working relationship with MACC and we have given full cooperation to their investigations," Abdul Ghafar said.
