MACC lodges police report against Terengganu Bersatu chief for slanderous speech

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) has lodged a police report against the Terengganu Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chief over a slanderous remark posted on social media recently.

In a statement issued today, it said that Terengganu Bersatu chief Senator Datuk Razali Idris issued several false accusations against the agency in his speech during the launching ceremony of the Kemaman parliament by-election machinery on Nov 10.

Video of the speech, posted on TikTok account @wancin11, showed Razali allegedly saying that the government machinery, MACC and judges are controlled by the current government, as well as disputing the decision of the High Court Judge regarding the conviction of four charges against the former Youth and Sports Minister, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

"MACC takes slander and accusations seriously because it can affect the public's confidence in the enforcement and legal system of this country.

"MACC is an enforcement body empowered by law to carry out its anti-corruption functions and roles independently and professionally without being controlled by any party.

"Therefore, MACC hopes that appropriate action can be taken immediately against those who issue and spread such defamation and accusations," the statement said, today.

In the TikTok video, Razali implicated that the government controls the government agencies and the judges which resulted in the Muar member of parliament Syed Saddiq to be sentenced to seven years jail and two strokes of the cane for charges of abetting criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation of property and two counts of money laundering.

He compared this to a case, believed to be pertaining to the discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) given to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi over his multiple corruption charges.

He said that the people should vote in the Kemaman by-election in order to signal to the government that they are rejecting its ways of running the country.
