Family of four detained over suspicion that woman died of abuse

KEMAMAN: At first, her family claimed that she had died of normal causes.

However, when doctors inspected her body, they found bruises on her eyes as well as her body, and came to the realisation that the 22-year-old woman may have been a victim of abuse.

This was the scenario which played out in Kampung Binjai, Kemaman which led to the arrest of the woman's family members following her death on April 26.

District police chief Superintendent Mohd Said Ibrahim said the family had reported the woman's death as "of natural causes."

Doctors however believed otherwise, given the extensive marks on her body and police were notified.

"We immediately detained her family members. These included her 49-year-old father; the victim's stepmother, 35; sister, 21; and her brother, 14.

"They were detained at their home in Kampung Binjai yesterday," he said.

All four family members are being remanded for a week to facilitate a police probe.

"We are investigating the case for possible abuse," said Mohd Said.

Meanwhile, in another development, a doctor from the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital lodged a report on April 27 after suspecting that a seven-month-old baby had been abused.

He said the baby girl was found with head injuries when her mother collected her from a babysitter's house in Kertih.

The case is being investigated for child abuse. No arrests have been made yet.
