Teras is no more

KUCHING: Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras), a splinter party formed two years ago, was effectively dissolved today.

Its acting president Datuk Peter Nansian said the decision was made after consulting the office bearers and members.

“I hereby announce that Teras has been dissolved today. Our members as well as former leaders who had won in the state polls as Barisan Nasional direct candidates are free to join any BN component parties,” he said.

The party was formed to accommodate the breakaway fractions from Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) and to end the internal leadership crisis.

However, those who contested as BN direct candidates had also pledged loyalty to existing BN component parties.

“This also means that they can’t return to Teras, hence, there’s no point in having Teras anymore. So, we decided to close down the party,” he said.

He said the decision (to dissolve the party) will also make it easier for the three former Teras leaders who had won in the election.

“They don’t have to worry about abandoning the party… They can go ahead and join any parties,” he said.

Peter believed such a move would strengthen the BN under ‘Team Adenan’.

“Otherwise, we would be spreading ourselves into two teams again,” he added.
