KUALA LUMPUR: Police on Thursday nabbed a Nigerian man and seized RM2 million worth of methamphetamine in Seri Kembangan, Selangor.
The drugs, found hidden in seven ceramic horse replicas, were smuggled from China through a shipping cargo service.
Federal police Narcotics Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the success came from intelligence gathered by the department and police's Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group.
"Following information gathered by our officers, police carried out an operation at the Suria Permai apartment in Bandar Putra Permai about 3pm on Thursday and nabbed a Nigeran man.
"The suspect, aged 28, was caught while he was unloading boxes containing the horse replicas which, when checked, contained four packets of drugs each inside.
"Tests conducted confirmed that the drugs were methamphetamine," he told reporters during a press conference at the department's office in Bukit Aman, here, today.
Mokhtar said they believe that the suspect is a part of a syndicate, and police are tracking its other members.
The man is being remanded for 14 days to facilitate investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Mokhtar said between Jan 1 and May 12, the department arrested a total of 97 Africans who were involved in drug-smuggling activities.
During the same period, police nabbed a total of 73,494 drug suspects including 7,460 who were involved in drug distribution rings, and seized RM100 million worth of drugs.
