80 percent of Klang Valley folk to live within 400m of transport services: Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR: By 2030, 80 percent of the Klang Valley population are expected to live within 400 metres of public transport services by 2030.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government has rolled out a host of public transport initiatives to improve transportation in the country.

"As we gear up to realise an aggressive target of 40 percent public transport modal share for Greater Kuala Lumpur and an average of 15 percent for other capital cities by the year 2030, we also expect 80 percent of the Klang Valley population to live within 400 metres of the public transport service.

"We have rolled out a host of public transport initiatives including improving the main rail line here within the Klang Valley, down south and to the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia; improvement on monorail and LRT services' capacity, Bus Performance Monitoring Hub System; new taxi business model; promotion of park and ride facilities and an automated fare collection system," he said at the 16h International Association of Public Transport (UITP) Asia-Pacific assembly.

He said Rapid KL's LRT Line Extension Project, which was expected to provide an additional 300,000 daily commuters, would be fully operational within the next few days.

Phase 1 of the MRT Line 1 from Sungai Buloh to Kajang would be open in December this year while Phase 2 is scheduled to open in July 2017.

The government is also looking towards increasing the public transport modal share with the upcoming Putrajaya Urban Rail project, currently in the pipeline.

"We are committed towards ensuring that no projects are delayed. However, if the delays are inevitable, it should be at the very minimal," he added.
