Aftar smashes men's 400m hurdles record at IPT

KUALA LUMPUR: Aftar Rosli clocked 54.50s to break the men's 400m hurdles record at the Institution of Higher Learning (IPT) Athletics Grand Finals at Arena Stadium of Universiti Malaya yesterday.

The Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)) undergraduate erased the previous mark of 54.90 set by UPM's Ruslem Zikry Putera Roseli in March. Unimap's Amirul Baharuddin (55.64) was second and UTM's Aidan Andrew Danial (57.26) was third.

Aftar said: "My aim next year is to improve my personal best of 53.66 and qualify for my first Asean University Games."

National women's discus champion Queenie Ting, who is pursuing a degree in physical education at UPM, won the gold with a throw of 41.29m, which was almost one metre short of the national record of 52.77m she set at the IPT Grand Finals last December.

Only two athletes took part in the women's pole vault - UPM's Nor Sarah Adi and Unimas' Evelyne Tan. Both cleared 3.10m but Nor Sarah was awarded the gold.

UPSI's Sunik Muslimin won the men's long jump with a leap of 7.09m while UIAM's Ilham Hazmi Shamshul Nizam (6.76m) and UPM's Naffez Akmal Zamri (6.72m) settled for silver and bronze respectively.

UPM's Kamal Farhan Rahman won the men's shot put gold with a throw of 15.15m while USM's Mirach Han (13.73m) and UPM's Luqman Hakim Baharuddin (13.23m) took silver and bronze respectively.
