(Badminton) Malaysia through to Thomas Cup semis

KUNSHAN, CHINA: Malaysia are through to the semi-finals of the Thomas Cup following a 3-1 victory over Taiwan in the quarter-finals in Kunshan, China on Thursday.

Following a favourable draw on Wednesday, the national team has started to believe its may exceed expectations of just reaching the last four stage.

Malaysia had topped Group C after three straight wins against England (4-1), Germany (4-0) and South Korea (3-2) in the preliminary stage.

Lee Chong Wei got things rolling on Thursday when he chalked up a 21-18, 21-18 win over Chou Tien Chen

Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, however, failed to double the lead when they went down 16-21, 21-19, 21-19 to Lee Sheng Mu-Tsaid Chia Hsin.

Reigning national champion Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin kept his cool to regain the lead for Malaysia with a convincing 21-8, 21-13 win over Hsu Jen Hao.

Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong then sealed the tie for the national team when they saw off Chen Hung Ling-Wang Chi Lin 21-16, 22-20

Malaysia will play the winner of the quarter-final tie between Japan and Denmark which will take place later on Thursday.

Also through to the semi-finals were Indonesia who defeated Hong Kong 3-1. They will face the winner of the China-South Korea quarter-final.
