TANJUNG MALIM: Married couples should have a knowledge of the law with regard to relationships in this country.
Lubuk Merbau state assemblyman Datuk Siti Hasmah Mat Jusak said it would ensure that they could defend their rights and lead a harmonious life.
She said a progressive and united community was a reflection of a harmonious family life.
“An awareness of their rights and knowledge of family laws could help society lead a more organised and systematic life, especially a basic understanding of the laws including civil and syariah laws and customs of daily life.
“This must be understood by every couple, family head and community leader so that they could play a more effective role in the family institution and a harmonious society,” she said.
Siti Hasmah was speaking at the closing ceremony of the one-day Law Literacy Programme 2016 titled “Respect of Women: Gender Equality and Promoting Understanding in Family Institutions” organised by Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) here today.
She said the breakdown of the family institution and society would become more critical if pro-active measures were not taken to resolve the problems.
