LANGKAWI: Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tuanku Hajah Haminah today launched commemorative coins issued by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) in conjunction with 100th anniversary of the Girl Guides Association of Malaysia (GGAM).
Her Majesty, who is also the royal patron of the association, had earlier officiated the 2015/2016 GGAM annual general meeting, which was also attended by the Prime Minister’s wife and GGAM president Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, at the Langkawi International Convention Centre, here.
Also present were the Raja Puan Muda of Perak and Kedah GGAM president Dato Seri Diraja Tunku Soraya Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’Adzam Shah, the Tengku Puan of Pahang and Pahang GGAM president Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah Almarhum Sultan Iskandar and GGAM chief commissioner Normala Baharudin.
Meanwhile, BNM in a statement said there were two specifications of the commemorative coins, namely the Silver Commemorative Coin (CSCCS) (proof) and Nordic Gold Briliant Uncirculated (B.U) Commemorative Coin.
“For the CSCC, this proof coloured coin is made of fine silver with 99.9 purity and weighs 31.10 grams. It has a face value of RM10 dan will be sold at RM212 a piece. The mintage quantity is 500 pieces.
“For the Nordic Gold (B.U) coin, it has a face value of RM1 and will be sold at RM10.60 each. The mintage quantity is 10,000 pieces,” the statement said.
Bank Negara also said these commemorative coins were also available in a set of two, consisting of the silver and nordic gold proof coins, and a total of 2,000 sets were available for sale each priced at RM265.
Tuanku Hajah Haminah in her speech when opening AGM said she hoped that the inculcation of knowledge, skills and good values through activities and programmes conducted by the association would be able to produce high-calibre women.
She said the inculcation of good values and adherence to the rules and laws of the Girl Guides were also seen as able to churn out young girls who would have the ability to encounter any hurdles in the increasingly challenging competition of the era of globalisation.
“The vision of the Girl Guides Association is to spearhead the potential development of girls and women, in order to bring about changes. As such, it should be the commitment of GGAM to produce high-calibre women,” she said.
Rosmah in her speech said in order to strengthen its existence, GGAM was aiming to increase its membership from the current 85,000 members to 100,000 by 2017.
“I really hope that all the association state branch presidents will work hard to ensure this target is achieved,” she said.
Rosmah said the Girl Guides was a leading association in providing a platform for non-formal education of girls and young women, as well as encouraging its members to make a difference.
As such, she said the involvement of young women in the association should be widened to enable them to contribute to every level of society, thus making the uniformed volunteer body to remain relevant.
At the event, Tuanku Hajah Haminah also presented the GGAM Paduka Srikandi Award to GGAM deputy president and Raja Puan Besar of Perak, Raja Nor Mahani Raja Shahar Shah and the GGAM Srikandi Award to Kuala Lumpur GGAM president Datuk Yeoh Soo Keng.
A total of 228 GGAM delegates from around the country are attending the four-day AGM which started on Thursday. --Bernama
