Penang oil spill cleanup completed

GEORGE TOWN: The salvage and cleanup operation for an oil spill in the Straits of Malacca has been officially completed, said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

Lim said the operation was closed after authorities in charge of the operation successfully managed to contain and clean up the oil spill.

"I am very satisfied with the efforts and swift action of the authorities, which included the Marine Department and Department of Environment," he told reporters after launching the Penang Amazing Race at Fort Corwallis, here today.

It was reported that oil had spilled from a vessel anchored in Perai, resulting in oil pollution across 77 square miles.

The oil spill, which was detected on Friday night, was brought under control within 24 hours.
