Police to boost security at K. Kangsar, Sg Besar by-elections

KUALA TERENGGANU: Security at the two by-elections in Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar will be heightened in view of the two seats being hotly-contested.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said that an estimated 2,000 policemen would be deployed to the parliamentary by-election in Kuala Kangsar, Perak and about 5,000 personnel to the state seat of Sungai Besar, Selangor.

“More policemen will be deployed to Sungai Besar as we reckon the situation there will be very tense during campaigning and on the election day.

“We expect a large number of supporters at both seats but we are confident of managing security and crowd control,” he said after attending the the national-level police Quran recital competition at Wisma Darul Iman, here today.

Noor Rashid advised supporters from all political parties to campaign in an orderly manner, abide by the law and not take matters into their hands to disrupt public order.

On another note, Noor Rashid called on motorists to be civic-minded and avoid using highway emergency lanes as this could impede enforcement, medical and rescue agencies from carrying out their tasks smoothly.

“We have time and again advised motorists not to drive through or stop at emergency lanes that are meant for the police, ambulance, fire engines and the like.

“I hope errant motorists will change their attitude for the better. If need be, we will be more stringent with the culprits and not offer them discounts for compounds,” he said.

Noor Rashed added that police would also be taking action against errant motorists caught in the act by photographs submitted by the public.
