Man finds baby's body while digging for toilet

KUALA TERENGGANU: The body of a newborn baby girl was found in a sewage pump of a house in Kuala Terengganu on Friday.

A 27-year-old woman, believed to be the mother, has been detained to assist police investigation.

It was learnt the body was discovered when the woman’s relative was digging a hole to build a new toilet. He then spotted the baby’s body in the sewage pump.

District police chief Superintendent Idris Abdul Rafar said that upon questioning, the woman confessed to having discarded the baby after a miscarriage.

"She is now warded in hospital for further treatment," he said.

He said the baby’s remains were sent to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital at 9.30pm the same day.

The case was being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealment of birth by disposal of a dead body. Under the law, those convicted can be jailed for a maximum of two years or a fine, or both.
