44,000 residential owners slapped with warnings for not separating household waste

JOHOR BARU: More than 44,000 owners of residential premises in Johor received warning letters from the state Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) for not separating their household waste during checks that were conducted since September last year.

Johor SWCorp director, Asri Amat said these households could possibly be issued with compounds, if they remain adamant in not separating their household waste, following the enforcement of separation of household waste at source policy, beginning tomorrow.

Asri said 141,672 residential premises have been checked in Johor and 44,270 warning letters were issued to premise owners.

"SWCorp will go to residental premises that have received warning letters beginning tomorrow and will check on their household waste management.

"Premises that fail to separate their household waste will be given a compound letter and SWCorp officers will refer the owners to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for the issuance of compounds," he said at a press conference at MSC Cyberport building, here, today.

Compounds for landed-residentials will be RM50 for first time offenders, RM100 for the second offence, and RM300 for the a third offence.

Non-landed premises owners who fail to separate their household waste could receive a compound of RM100 for the first time, and RM200 and RM500 for the second and third time, respectively.

Compounds for non-landed premises will be given to the Joint Management Board of the building.

"Compounds can be paid at all SWCorp centres nationwide. Individuals who fail to pay their compound will be brought to court and can be fined up to a maximum of RM1,000," he said.
