Sarawak police mum on rumours that burnt accident victim was politician's grandson

KUCHING: Investigation is ongoing to ascertain the identity of a man, who was burnt to death during a car-motorcycle accident here.

This is being done amid rumours suggesting that the victim is the grandson of a prominent political figure in Sarawak.

A spokesman from the Sarawak police force also denied reports circulating in social media which claimed that the police have issued a statement confirming the identity of the car driver in Saturday’s accident.

The spokesman, who is also a high-ranking officer in the Sarawak police force, said the investigation team is still awaiting the post-mortem report for the body, currently at the Sarawak General Hospital.

“The case is still being investigated and we have yet to ascertain the identity of the victim.

“During the accident on Saturday, the identification documents and other personal belongings were destroyed when the car was gutted.

“Thus, it will take time even for the medical experts to identify the victim,” the spokesman said.

He, however, declined to elaborate further.

The police spokesman was responding to social media postings suggesting that the car driver killed during the mishap was the grandchildren of a prominent political figure in the state.

An aide to the political figure also refused to comment and asked the media to refer to the police instead.

The accident involved a collision with a motorcycle at Jalan Sultan Tengah in Santubong near here.

Also killed during the 3.30am accident was the 31-year-old motorcyclist identified as Mohamad Jumadi Rais.

Initial investigation showed that the car driver was believed to have lost control of his vehicle before it skidded and rammed into the motorcycle.

The impact of the accident sparked flames which gutted the entire car including the driver. Meanwhile, the motorcycle had knocked into a street light pole by the road side.
