Don't undermine Private Member's Bill before understanding it, urges Pas

PASIR PUTIH: Political parties should refrain from undermining efforts to table the Private Member's Bill aimed at widening the powers of syariah courts in the country.

Pas ulama chief Datuk Mahfodz Mohamed said any party which gave negative comments now is attempting to defeat its tabling in Parliament.

"I call on all members of Parliament to open their hearts and minds on this matter."

He said parliamentarians could debate on the issue when the bill comes up in Parliament later this year.

"Do not sprinkle fine poison on the efforts to table the bill," he said at the opening of Pas Dewan Ulama meeting in Tok Bali here last night.

Pas vice-president Idris Ahmad opened the meeting.

Mahfodz said although Pas had yet to be permitted by God to implement hudud, the efforts to table the bill to enable the enforcement of the syariah criminal law were a good step for the party.

On another issue, he said Pas was willing to form political co-operation with any group.

"The co-operation should be on grounds that Islam benefits."

He said any co-operation should also be based on guidance from the ulama in Pas.
