Only 2 out of 71 houses in Malacca neighbourhood failed to separate waste

MALACCA: Enforcement on the waste separation policy that began today in Malacca got off to a good start, with only two out of 71 houses in Taman Seri Serindit issued with notices.

State Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) director Zulkifli Tamby Chik said that awareness on waste separation was also evident, via the reduced amount of solid waste transported to the Sungai Udang landfill daily.

"We have seen a reduction in the number of solid waste sent to Sungai Udang, from an average of 1,200 tonnes to only 920 tonnes since its implementation in Sept last year," he told reporters after inspecting residential homes in Taman Seri Serindit here.

He said residents would be issued with notices of offences first, before the case is further investigated and handed over to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for offenders to be fined in court.

The operation involved 27 SWCorp officers inspecting 515 homes in Taman Tun Kudu, Taman Ganun Setia, Taman Rim Mutiara, Taman Seri Paya Rumput, including Taman Seri Serindit.

For landed properties, one can be fined RM50 for the first offence, and subsequently would be increased to RM100 and RM500, respectively.

For non-landed properties such as condominiums, the management board can be fined RM100 for first offence, followed by RM200 and RM500 for the second and third offences.
