Health Ministry records statements from dentists who tended to Syed Alman

GEORGE TOWN: The Health Ministry is in the midst of an inquiry into the death of Datuk Syed Alman Zain Syed Alwi, the son-in-law of

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya said the ministry had recorded statements from the owner of the dental clinic visited By Syed Alman, as well as statements from the two dentists who attended to him.

"Our investigations are still ongoing.

"We are working together with the police in the matter. The ministry will establish if the dentists had violated laws governing medical practices in the private sector," he said.

Di Hilmi said the ministry has classified the incident under the Private Healthcare Facilities And Services (Act 586) Regulations 2006.

Asked on the findings of the ministry's investigations, Dr Hilmi declined to elaborate further.

Dr Hilmi was speaking to reporters after visiting Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah at the intensive care unit in the Penang Hospital.

Syed Alman Zain, 44, was the husband of Datuk Nurulhidayah, who is Zahid's eldest daughter.

He had gone to the clinic with a friend for a dental appointment at 6pm last Wednesday but passed out while undergoing treatment at the clinic in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.

He was rushed to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre but was later pronounced dead.
