Police waiting UK approval to interview paedophile Richard Huckle

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian police are awaiting the green light from the British authorities to record a statement from Briton paedophile Richard Huckle who has been sentenced to life imprisonment in Britain for sex abuse against children in Malaysia and Cambodia.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the police had applied to record the statement through “mutual legal assistance” with the help of the Attorney-General’s Chambers and the Foreign Ministry.

“We want to interview Huckle not just to gather information on his victims but also to find out whether he has any partner in crime who may be out there targeting children,” he said.

Khalid spoke to reporters after presenting Aidilfitri cookies to heads of Royal Malaysia Police departments for distribution to police personnel who would be on duty during the Aidilfitri holidays.

A London court sentenced Huckle to 22 life sentences on June 6 after he admitted to 71 charges of sex abuse against children in Malaysia and Cambodia over a decade from 2006.--BERNAMA
