Zahid performs 'tarawih' prayers with 300 Muslims

BAGAN DATOH: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi tonight performed ‘isya’ and ‘tarawih’ prayers with about 300 Muslims at Masjid Ahmadiah Kampung Sungai Batang, Selekoh, here tonight.

After ‘tarawih’ prayers led by Ustaz Khairul Amal Hashim, he joined fellow Muslims in ‘moreh” (meal) comprising of satay and soto ayam.

This is his first programe with the people as Member of Parliament for Bagan Datoh during the month of Ramadan.

Ahmad Zahid had a tight schedule as he led the campaign for two parliamentary by-elections namely Sungai Besar in Selangor and Kuala Kangsar in Perak.

He then paid last respects to the late Lai Sai Tiang,78, the mother of Tan Soon Seng, a friend and trader in Selekoh.

Lai died on Saturday and her funeral will take place tomorrow. Earlier, Ahmad Zahid attended ‘tahlil’ prayers followed by breaking fast and ‘maghrib’ prayers at Masjid Al-Qura, Bagan Datoh.

He also approved allocation to repair the roof and dome of the mosque as requested by the mosque committee and also mingled wih fellow Muslims.

On another note, Ahmad Zahid said illegal immigrants can go to their embassies to get temporary travel documents to enable them to go home to celebrate Aidilfitri. The temporary travel documents were prepared in collaboration with the Indonesian Embassy, the Bangladesh High Commission and the embassies of several Islamic countries.

“I am told that non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from Indonesia will provide a special plane to take home the illegal immigrants,” said the home minister.

Some 250,000 illegal immigrants from Indonesia took the offer last year.
