SPAD zooms in to nab ticket touts in Larkin

JOHOR BARU: Three ticket touts including an elderly man in his 50s, were caught by a Land and Public Transport Commission (SPAD) enforcement team in an operation at the Larkin Sentral bus terminal today.

The three men, two of whom in their 20s, were caught flogging bus tickets to visitors outside the counter area while wandering around the bus terminal platform.

A SPAD spokesman said a total of 40 enforcement officers from the commission, and the Johor Baru Road Transport Department were involved in the three-hour operation.

"Some plainclothes officers apprehended the touts on the spot. We issued a notice to two bus operators for engaging the illegal touts by selling tickets outside the counters," said the spokesman.

He said those found guilty of the offences can be penalised under Section 205 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010. An offender can be fined up to RM10,000 or imprisoned for a year.

The two bus companies could be fined between RM500 to RM500,000 under Section 22 of the same Act for hiring illegal touts and selling tickets outside the ticketing counters.

The spokesman said the operation is part of the ongoing SPAD enforcement operation during the festive season, which began on June 26 and ends on July 16 nationwide.
