Grab driver's night of terror at the hands of cabbies

KUALA LUMPUR: A 35-year-old Grab driver was allegedly assaulted by group of taxi drivers, who also damaged his car early today.

The man had reportedly arrived in front of a shopping mall in the city at 2am to pick up two passengers from India, when the incident occurred.

Brickfields district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sharul Othman Mansor said a taxi driver began yelling at the Grab driver for stealing his customers.

“The cabbie then forced the foreigners to get out of the car. Fearing for their safety, the foreigners obeyed the cabbie.

“The Grab driver then told the cabbie that he was only there at the request of the clients. The cabbie, however, then tried to snatch the driver’s handphone away but failed.

“The cabbie then kicked the victim's right hand and proceeded to kick the Grab vehicle," he said.

Sharul said several other cabbies who saw the incident also joined in after the commotion broke out.

“They joined in and started kicking the car, which damaged its passenger doors, mirror, signal light and bumper," he said.

Sharul said police have also recorded a statement from the Grab driver.

"According to the Grab driver, he was unsure of how many taxi drivers involved during the incident but said he is able to identify them.

"We are still waiting for the shopping mall’s management to hand over the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage to assist us in the investigation," he said, adding that no injuries were reported during the incident.
