Five charged with smuggling immigrants into Malaysia

TELUK INTAN: Five men, including four Indonesians, were charged in the Sessions Court here today for the smuggling of immigrants last month.

S. Krishna Rao, 27, and four Indonesians namely Jumardi, 24; Muhammad Rizky Pasaribu, 25; Irwansyah Putra, 27; and Supratman, 35, were charged with smuggling 46 Indonesian immigrants.

They were accused of committing the acts at Kunci Air Bagan Lipas, Selekoh, Rungkup near Bagan Datoh around 6am between June 7 until June 9, last month.

They were accused of committing the offence punishable under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 related to Section 34 of the Penal Code

This carries a prison sentence of up to 15 years or a fine, or both.

All the accused indicated their understanding of the charges read to them before Judge Norita Mohd Ardani, but no plea was taken.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohammad Suffian Jaafar, then asked the court to fix a date for the mention of the case in order to seek permission to transfer the case to the Ipoh High Court.
