Power bikers fulfil cancer girl's dream

KUANTAN: Eleven-year-old Nureen Izwana Abdullah was shocked when a group of high-powered motorcyclists arrived at her house in Perumahan Sri Damai here yesterday afternoon.

The skin cancer (malignant melanoma) patient was left speechless when one of the riders greeted her before inviting her to ride with them on a Kawasaki GTR 1400.

She could not believe her eyes when the group leader, Rafi Ahmad, 38, handed her a jacket and a helmet before they headed out for a ride around Kuantan town.

Nureen, a Year Five pupil at SK Kampung Belukar here, was
diagnosed with cancer two years ago.

She is an avid fan of high-powered motorcycles and had always dreamt of riding on one.

Her mother, Noriza Abdul Rashid, 38, had posted her daughter’s love for motorcycles on Facebook. Rafi, who saw the posting, informed his club members and they organised a surprise treat for Nureen.

Smiling from ear to ear, the second of four siblings said she had always been obsessed with high-powered motorcycles and could not believe when she was invited to ride on one.

“I was thrilled to see the motorcycles parked in front of my house. My dream to ride on it has come true. I am very excited.”

Rafi, who led the “Malacca Bikers” convoy of 14 riders for the “Ride with Nureen” programme, said they travelled 300km from Malacca to Kuantan to put a smile on Nureen’s face.

“I read the posting by Nureen’s mother and contacted her before planning the charity ride with my group members.

“Everything went smoothly and we presented Nureen a jacket and helmet as souvenirs,” he said.

Noriza said Nureen was diagnosed with third-stage skin cancer in 2013 and had undergone surgeries and chemotherapy at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

“She is going for follow-up treatments at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here.

“Her condition is improving and I am praying that she will get better,” said the single mother, who has three other children aged between 1 and 18 years.
