Killer of Penang family of four shot dead in gunfight with police

GEORGE TOWN: The man who shot dead four people, including a two-year-old boy, at a factory in Batu Maung here yesterday, was shot dead this evening.

It is learnt he was engaged in a gunfight with the police in Air Itam.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar moments ago via his Twitter account @KBAB51 congratulated the Bukit Aman Special Task Force on Organised Crime (STAFFOC) team for taking down the criminal.

“Congratulations STAFFOC for bringing down a criminal after an exchange of fire in Air Itam today.

“The suspect is believed to have been involved in the murder of a family of four,” he wrote.

The victims were Tan Saw Sim, 55; her son Chung Wah Tong, in his 30s; and her grandson, two-year-old Ayden Chung.

Also dead was Tan's boyfriend Toh Hock Choon, 50. Toh is believed to be the owner of the chicken factory.

A family feud over money is believed to have led to the killings.

The victims were sleeping in the factory's makeshift living quarters when they were killed. Police said CCTV footage recovered from the scene showed that they were all shot at close range.

The man had stolen Toh’s pickup truck and fled the scene. Police later found the vehicle abandoned in Bukit Mertajam.

Penang Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk Razaruddin Husain is expected to give a press conference shortly.
