Kelantan student group finally arrive in Cairo after being stranded in Turkey

KOTA BARU: A group of 30 Kelantan students who were stranded in Turkey for more than 36 hours following an attempted coup, have finally arrived in Cairo.

The group, accompanied by a students' official, touched down in Cairo at 9pm local time yesterday (3am Malaysian time today).

Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob said he was informed of their arrival by student representatives in Egypt.

"Families of the students here no longer need to worry as they have arrived at their destination safely," he told reporters after attending a Hari Raya Open House organised by the state Islamic Department.

The group of first-year students were on their way to register at the famous Al-Azhar University. They arrived in Turkey about 4am local time on Saturday and were supposed to take a connecting flight to Cairo two hours later.

Ahmad said the students would be sitting for a qualification test in the next few days to decide whether they could join their first-year classes or attend a preparatory Arabic course.
