Teacher 'grooming' student case unacceptable, says parent-teacher group

KUALA LUMPUR: The case involving a teacher, who had allegedly engaged in a romantic relationship with a secondary school student, is unacceptable and that it should not have happened, the National Parent-Teacher Associations Collaborative Council (PIBGN) president Associate Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Ali Hassan said.

The case, he said, is wrong at all levels, not only because it crossed the teacher-student professional boundaries, but also because the teacher is still married to her husband and the couple has children.

He hoped the Education Ministry as well as schools would take preventive actions to prevent similar cases from happening in the future.

"Since she (the teacher allegedly involved in the case) still has a husband and children, I think this kind of incident should not have happened.

"It needs to be prevented. Appropriate action should be taken by the ministry or the school," he told Harian Metro today.

Mohamad Ali was asked to comment on the case in which a teacher was alleged to have 'groomed' her 17-year-old student despite the woman already having a husband and five children.

He added the action by the family of the student to lodge a police report over the matter is necessary because they were concerned about the disturbance and emotional impact on the teenager's education.

"These teenagers may think it's puppy love. But this is unusual and needs to be stopped," he said.

He suggested holding a meeting between the teacher and the student's family, in addition to both parties attending counseling sessions to encourage them to repent.

Earlier today, police confirmed receiving a report over a female teacher who allegedly groomed her Form FIve student.

Sepang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof, when contacted today, said the report was lodged by a family member of the boy.
