Petronas marks milestone with RM1.3b PAMER operations

KOTA TINGGI: Petronas today reached another milestone with the development of the RM1.3 billion Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) Raw Water Supply Project (PAMER) which would churn out a total of 260 million litres of raw water per day (mld).

Of this, 230 mld is for the PIC, while the remaining 30 mld would be supplied to the Sungai Lebam Reservoir to supplement the state's existing water supply for public consumption in Pengerang.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the first phase of PAMER, which began operations last March, has been supplying water to the Sungai Lebam Dam.

Khaled said this would solve the water supply problem to Pengerang and Bandar Penawar here.

"The supply of water to PIC will begin before the end of the year," he told a press conference after launching the operations of the Seluyut Dam today.

Also present were Petronas president and group chief executive officer Datuk Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin, Petronas Refinery and Petrochemical Corporation Sdn Bhd (PRPC) senior vice president and chief executive officer Dr Colin Wong and State Public Works Rural and Regional Development Committee chairman Datuk Hasni Mohammad.

PAMER is one of the six associated facilities of the PIC which comprises the Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (RAPID) project.

On a separate matter, Khaled said the state government has gathered evidence on the Sungai Johor ammonia contamination for investigation.

"It is a normal reaction for Sime Darby Plantation Sdn Bhd to issue that kind of statement. We do not want to argue in the media," Khaled said in response to a question regarding Sime Darby Bhd's statement.

The company had said that there was no physical evidence to show that Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) was the cause of the pollution which recently affected water supply to 600,000 people in parts of Johor.

Sime Darby Plantation reportedly confirmed that the company had received a notice of 60-day suspension of licence for its Ulu Remis Palm Oil Mill from the Department of Environment of Johor on 14 July 2016.
