Elderly woman dies, believed assaulted by her grandson

ALOR STAR: An 86-year-old grandmother died yesterday morning at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital here, from injuries believed inflicted by her grandson.

The incident involving the deceased, identified as Aton Hamid, is believed to have occurred at their house in Gunung Keriang between 10 and 11am on July 16.

Her son, Zakaria Ismail, 54, found her unconscious, bleeding in her nose and ear about 11am and lodged a report at 7.10pm later that day.

Relating the incident, Zakaria said he had left his house about 10am to buy breakfast for his mother, his sister in her 60s, and his 29-year-old nephew.

“Upon reaching home, I heard a commotion inside the house. My mother and my nephew were arguing over something.

“I stayed outside and waited until the commotion was over. When my nephew left, then I entered.

“To my horror, I found my mother lying unconscious in the living room. Blood was oozing out of her nose and ear,” he said, adding that his sister was seated nearby his mother, one of her eyes swollen.

Speaking to reporters at the hospital mortuary yesterday, Zakaria said he then took his mother to the hospital for treatment, but after being warded for five days, his mother succumbed to injuries about 4.40am yesterday.

Zakaria believed his nephew had done something to his mother and sister.

Zakaria further claimed that his nephew frequently asked him for money, and if he did not give in to his demands, the 29-year-old would try to hit him.

"He is the son of my sister from Sungai Buloh who had stayed with us since five years ago,"

“He hit me before, on my right shoulder and right hand,” Zakaria said, adding that the nephew, his sister’s son, had started staying with them five years ago.

Meanwhile, deputy Kota Star district police chief Superintendent Rohana Omar, confirming that a police report had been lodged, said a post-mortem is being carried out to determine the cause of death.

Rohana said a man has been arrested to assist investigations.
