Woman dies, brother severely injured in road crash

KENINGAU: A woman died and her younger brother was severely injured after the car they were travelling in collided with a four-wheel drive vehicle at Mile 27 of the Keningau-Tenom Road early today.

Keningau district police chief, Superintendent Yampil Garai said a Toyota Hilux travelling from Keningau to Tenom collided with the Proton Wira the siblings were travelling in from the opposite direction at 2.30am.

He said Nurul Syakina Kasim, 22, who was driving the car, was pronounced dead at the scene, while her 17-year-old brother broke a leg and left arm. The 38-year-old driver of the Toyota Hilux sustained only light injuries. Both of the injured were being treated at Keningau Hospital.

"The Proton Wira is believed to have lost control, veered into the opposite lane, and collided with the Toyota Hilux. The driver of the Proton Wira died at the scene due to severe head injuries, while the male passenger suffered a broken leg and left arm," Yampil said.

"The injured victims are currently receiving treatment at the Keningau Hospital's Red Zone, with one of them unconscious, while the Toyota Hilux driver sustained only minor injuries."

He said the accident was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.
