More than 2,000 Malaysian couples marry in South Thailand in first half of the year

KANGAR: More than 2,000 Malaysian couples were married in South Thailand during the first six months of this year.

According to the Malaysian Consul-General in Songkhla, Mohd Afandi Abu Bakar, last year, 4,081 Malaysian couples were married in Thailand.

He said this number included only the couples who registered their marriages at the Consulate so that they could be re-registered and validated upon returning to Malaysia.

“Couples who do not register their marriages with the Consulate will face difficulty validating them in Malaysia,” Mohd Afandi told Bernama in Songkhla today.

He was commenting on efforts by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) and the Islamic Council in five territories in South Thailand to streamline the conditions for Malaysian couples wanting to marry there.

This follows a three-day conference on marriage management involving the Registrar of Marriage in the territories of Satun, Narathiwat, Pattani, Songkhla and Yala held here last week. -- Bernama
