No need for rallies to come under NSC Act, says IGP

PUTRAJAYA: There is no need for rallies to be monitored under the National Security Council Act.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said that to date, police only investigate rallies under the Peaceful Assembly Act.

"I don't see any need for rallies to be investigated under the NSC Act ...the NSC Act is for something that can pose a threat to national security.

"That is why I always call upon everyone, including non-governmental organisations (NGO) to abide by the laws and heed our advice," he told a press conference after closing the 36th Aseanapol Conference at the Marriott Hotel here today.

However, he said some parties remain stubborn and habitually disregard the law.

Khalid said it would not be an issue if Bersih 5 plans to hold street protests.

"But they need to follow the rules. Get a notice from City Hall and consult with us. We will advise the organiser," he added.
