(Olympics) Shuttlers Vivian-Khe Wei aiming for extended run

RIO DE JANEIRO: Women's doubles Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei, glad to have finally made their Olympic debut, are now determined to go as far as possible in the Rio Games.

The Malaysians beat Britain's Heather Olver-Lauren Smith 21-17, 24-22 in a Group C tie at Pavilion 4, Riocentro on Thursday.

"It is such a great feeling to have played in the Olympics. Somehow, the feeling is different compared to 'Open' tournaments and we really enjoyed ourselves," said Vivian.

It was a cagey affair against the British pair but Khe Wei said they gradually took control and were able to dictate play.

"It took us a little time to settle but once we found our groove, we were in control," said Khe Wei.

The pair play Hong Kong's Poon Lok Yan-Tse Ying Suet today and expect a tougher test.

"We have played them twice before, losing both, but we are in the Olympics and every pair, I believe, has a chance.

"We will give it our maximum as we want our campaign to go on for as long as possible," said Vivian.

Earlier on Thursday, Lee Chong Wei got his singles campaign off to a flying start with a 21-2, 21-3 win over Suriname's Surin Opti.

Chong Wei, seeking to win the gold after taking silver in the last two Olympics, next plays Singapore's Derek Wong on Sunday.
