UTM professor among nine finalist for second ASEAN-US science prize

BANGKOK: A Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) professor, Dr Sharifah Rafidah Wan Alwi has been selected as one of the nine finalists for the second ASEAN-US Science Prize for Women in Energy Research.

The competition is organised by the regional grouping, the US mission to ASEAN and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) with this year's competition focused on sustainable energy research.

"ASEAN continues to look for ways to increase the diversity of its energy supply and to reduce the environmental impact of energy use in the region, and the Science Prize recognises some extraordinary women behind those efforts," said a statement issued by USAID, here, today.

Sharifah Rafidah is a director and academician at UTM, where she focuses on sustainable energy research, including on CO2 emission reduction in energy utilisation, and energy efficiency for industries and buildings.

This year's prize supports promising, early-career women scientists in the ASEAN region and encourages collaboration between ASEAN member states and the United States in sustainable energy solutions, it said.

The other finalists are Dr Reasmey Tan from Cambodia, Dr Witri Wahyu Lestari (Indonesia), Dr Latsamy Phounvisouk (Laos), Dr Thi Thi Soe (Myanmar), Dr Kathleen Aviso (Philippines), Dr Ho Gim Wei (Singapore), Dr Worajit Setthapun (Thailand) and Dr Phung Le (Vietnam).

The prize winner will be announced during the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science and Technology in late October. -- Bernama
