Serial convenience store robber arrested after crashing motorcycle in panic

JOHOR BARU: Police have arrested a 31-year-old man, believed to be a serial robber of 24-hour convenience stores here.

Johor Baru Utara police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Taib Ahmad said a team from the Perling police station had spotted the man on a motorcycle along Jalan Persisiran Perling in Taman Perling at 1am today.

"Upon closer inspection, the police team recognised the motorcyclist as a robbery suspect who had robbed a 24-hour convenience store in the vicinity.

"The suspect panicked and took off, but lost control of his motorcycle in a bid to shake police off his trail," Mohd Taib said in a statement.

The suspect was arrested, and police seized a parang, a set of Allen keys, screwdrivers, a jacket and a Honda EX5.

"The suspect is being investigated for robbing a 7-Eleven store in Taman Perling on Monday (August 22)," he said, adding that police believe he was also involved in the robbery of six other convenience stores.

Mohd Taib said the motorcycle bore a fake licence plate, and the vehicle's chassis number revealed that the motorcycle had been reported missing.

He also has a previous record for violent crimes.
