Police bust Gang Ah Wai, ending Serdang burglary spree

SERDANG: Police arrested four men aged between 30 and 40, believed to be involved in a spate of burglary cases in the district on Monday.

Prior to the arrest, Serdang police chief Assistant Commissioner Megat Mohd Aminuddin Megat Alias said the group had broken into a house in Jalan Tempua, Bandar Puchong Jaya on Aug 11 about 5.30am while the family was abroad.

Megat said the house owner only learnt about the incident after receiving a message from the community’s WhatsApp group on Aug 13.

"The family returned from Bangkok, Thailand, on Aug 16 at 12.30am to find that their lock had been broken and their car stolen, together with valuables such as credit cards, a luxury watch, a bag and cash.

“The suspect had swiped the credit card to refuel the vehicle," he told a press conference at the Serdang police headquarters here today.

Megat said that after further investigations, police arrested a man driving a stolen car in Taman Sungai Besi Indah.

“It was revealed that the man is wanted by police and was a former Simpang Renggam detainee. He has nine past convictions. Police also seized a car which was reported stolen in Cheras.

"Further investigation led police to the arrest of his two accomplices at Pangsapuri Sri Aman in Seri Kembangan.

“We seized several stolen items and burglary tools in the unit," he said, adding that the group was known as Gang Ah Wai.

Megat said the fourth suspect, a plumber, was picked up at Bandar Damai Perdana Cheras at 12.30pm.

Police later recovered two stolen cars, one of which belonged to the family.

Following the arrests, police believe they have solved seven burglary cases and three vehicle thefts in the Serdang district.

All suspects tested positive for methamphetamine. The gang is believed to have been active for two years.
