Lat's works of art now dot KL city centre

KUALA LUMPUR: Artwork by legendary Malaysian cartoonist Datuk Mohd Nor Khalid, famously known as Lat, are now dotted throughout the city centre for the public to enjoy.

A total of 22 sculptures featuring famous characters by Lat, including of the cartoonist himself, are located at 11 different spots along Jalan Melaka, Jalan Gereja and Jalan Chulan, also known as the Kuala Lumpur Heritage Trail Route 2.

Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the public artwork, while beautifying the city's landscape, can also help foster unity among Malaysians, especially the younger generation.

"Lat's drawings can help Malaysians appreciate better the the history of the nation and how the people live in unity despite being multi-racial.

"His humorous artwork can help knock stress from people as they go about their daily life by creating a relaxing atmosphere in a city which never sleeps," he said at the launch of the sculptures on Thursday.

The sculptures are a joint effort between the Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Lat.

Tengku Adnan, who is also Umno secretary-general, said City Hall will ensure the artwork remains in good shape.

He also called on the public to be the eyes and ears for City Hall in its effort to prevent vandalism such as the theft of drain covers.

"Such acts will not only tarnish the image of the city but also endanger the public," he said.

Meanwhile, Lat expressed gratitude for the recognition of his artwork.

"Kuala Lumpur is the place in which I started out my career in 1970 as a reporter with Berita Harian and later, with the New Straits Times.

"This is also the city in which I became famous as a cartoonist, hence it means a lot to have my works displayed publicly here," said Lat, whose works mostly illustrate Malaysia's social and political scenes in a light-hearted manner.
