TNB officers to be charged soon

KOTA BARU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) expects to complete its investigations into the abuse of power and bribery cases involving four Kelantan Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) officers soon.

It is learnt that the commission had established its case and just needed to tie up loose ends before completing the investigation and handing it to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further action.

Sources said there would be no more arrests and the four are expected to be charged soon.

The New Straits Times learned that assets seized by MACC from the four include expensive watches, such as Rolexes, Carrera Tag Heuers and Zeppelins, cars, houses, two women’s handbags and two handphones, as well as RM15,000.

Sources said assets seized from the ringleader, a 47-year-old senior TNB officer, included six houses worth more than RM3 million.

“The senior officer, who was the mastermind behind the scheme, owned a company doing contracting work, but it was named under his cronies and some of the TNB projects were tendered to the company.”

It is learnt that the senior officer had been living in luxury for more than five years and recruited the three other officers to work with him two years ago.

“The three officers, aged between 30 and 50, were believed to have received expensive watches and cash from the senior officer as reward for their work.

“They believed they were safe until MACC put a stop to their activities recently.”

The senior officer and the three have been remanded to facilitate MACC’s investigation into the case.

Their remand orders are expected to end tomorrow and Sunday.

They are being investigated under Section 17 and Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 and Section 4 of the Anti-Money Laundering Act.

In Malacca, a 56-year-old Public Works Department officer remanded to facilitate a corruption probe involving high-ranking civil servants was released on a RM300,000 bail yesterday.

The senior officer, who has a “Datuk” title, was earlier remanded for 10 days until yesterday.
