Tangkap MO1 rally in Kota Kinabalu ends after 10-minute speech

KOTA KINABALU: A group of students marched through the city centre here, calling authorities to act against “Malaysian Official 1” in relation to the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) issue.

Chanting “Tangkap MO1”, the group made their way to the city park near the Kota Kinabalu High Court, where the leader gave a 10-minute speech after police allowed them to do so.

Addressing the media and bystanders, #TangkapMO1Sabah coordinator Mukim Nantang urged Sabahans to rise and support the rally.

“We are here to fight against corruption and we want the police to arrest the Malaysian officer named in the United States Department of Justice (DoJ) civil claims,” he said.

District police chief M Chandra along with several officers and personnel were at the site to monitor movement of rally participants and to ensure that the situation remained under control throughout the assembly.

“I have given them 10 minutes to voice out their concern and they have obeyed our advice.

“Nonetheless, they have committed an offence and we will investigate it under Section 9 (5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act for notification of assembly. They had submitted the notice to us but it was not complete.”

Chandra said police have identified the organisers and would be calling up several individuals for statements, adding there were about 25 people who participated in the rally.

Police also confiscated several banners and placards.
