Uncovering history of holy places

MECCA: When you are here, do take the time to visit the famous Al Haramain museum.

Located next to the Kiswah (Kaabah drape) factory in Ummul Jud, the museum features a collection of important artefacts, antiquities and inscriptions from the Masjidil Haram and Nabawi mosques.

The museum has seven sections, starting with the entrance hall, which features old and recent portraits and models of Mecca and Madinah.

Every item tells a significant story. The Grand Mosque section, for example, highlights precious antiques and inscriptions related to Masjidil Haram.

Models of the Kiswah are featured at the Holy Kaabah hall. An old door from the Kaabah at this section is a favourite spot to take pictures.

Also of interest are the old, traditional machines and paraphernalia once used to make the Kiswah.

Photography enthusiasts will be taken in by the collection of rare pictures of the two holy mosques at the photography section.

A copy of a Quran belonging to Saidina Othman Affan is also showcased at the manuscripts hall.

It also contains samples of ancient manuscripts from the two holy mosques.

There are also the zam zam and Masjidil Nabawi sections.
