TELLY TALK: History revisited in Panorama

CELEBRATE Merdeka Day with local documentary programme, Panorama. It takes viewers to some of the country’s places related to historical events, such as Kuala Krau Police Station in Pahang and the museums in Perak.

Produced by Nawar Hani Kamaruddin and hosted by Wan Aliazar Wan Halim, this show will air tomorrow night at 9pm on TV1.

The first segment will focus on the darkest day (Sept 11, 1949) in the history of the police station located in Kuala Krau. In the wee hours on that fateful that day, the police station was ambushed by Communist guerillas who wanted the arms and weapons stored at the station.

Although the police on duty that day were outnumbered by the enemies, their valiant defence kept the Communists from taking over the station.

However, not many of us know the story of this incident compared to the widely publicised incident at Bukit Kepong Police Station in Johor the following year.

The fighting spirit showed by the police force in both places was commendable. The battle fought at each place however ended differently. The force in Kuala Krau managed to defeat the attacking Communists. All the heroic policemen in Bukit Kepong died.

The following segment brings viewers to one of the most historical towns in Malaysia, Taiping. Located in the northern part of the state of Perak, the town has many historical sites. Long before Ipoh, Taiping was the state’s administrative seat. Taiping’s Perak Museum is the oldest museum in the country. Built in 1883, it is of Moorish and Victorian design.

The documentary also visits Matang Museum, which was at a time known as the Kota Nagh Ibrahim History Complex. This museum was originally built as the residence for Ngah Ibrahim, who bore the title Orang Kaya Menteri Paduka. He was the son of Cek Long Jaffar, the first Malay to operate a tin mine in the Larut area.

The building which still stands strong focuses on the history of the tin industry in Larut, Perak.
