36 foreign workers test positive for Zika at Singapore construction site

JOHOR BARU: Singapore's Ministry of Health said that a total of 118 people working at a construction site where 37 cases of the Zika virus were detected, have been tested for the disease.

In a statement on its website, the ministry said following the tests, 36 foreign workers tested positive, of whom seven are currently warded at the Communicable Diseases Centre (CDC) at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The remaining 29 have since fully recovered.

The other case involved a Singaporean man who works at the construction site, located at 60, Sims Drive, and lives in Sembawang Drive. He has also been warded at the CDC after developing a fever and rashes since August 22.

An internet search revealed that the address is the site for the development of Sims Urban Oasis by Guocoland Ltd.

On Saturday, the National Environment Agency issued a stop work order (SWO) to the construction site after it found that the housekeeping of the site was unsatisfactory with potential mosquito breeding habitats.

"The construction site is required to rectify these conditions before the SWO can be lifted and to step up preventive measures to prevent recurrence of mosquito breeding," the statement said.

The on-site workers quarters at the construction site and two other dormitories at Senoko South and Kranji were also inspected on Saturday, where one breeding site was detected and destroyed at the dormitory at Kranji.
