KOTA KINABALU: A motorcyclist who was involved in a hit-and-run accident yesterday was arrested by police near here this morning.
In the 5.55pm incident yesterday, the motorcyclist, a 23-year-old restaurant worker, ran a red light and knocked down a schoolgirl who was crossing the road.
The incident was captured by a car surveillance camera, and the footage has gone viral on social media. The video also shows the motorcyclist fleeing the scene.
It is learnt that passers-by rushed the injured schoolgirl to a hospital and that she is believed to be in a stable condition.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner M Chandra said police had arrested the man at 8am for further investigation under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving.
“The incident occurred while the motorcyclist was rushing to work. According to the man, he is an asthma patient and was rushing to get his asthma inhaler at his work place in Karamunsing,” said Chandra.
He added that the motorcyclist tested negative for drugs and alcohol.
