KUALA LUMPUR: Jelutong DAP Member of Parliament has been urged to go to the nearest police station to help in the investigations into his comment on the death of PAS Spiritual Leader Datuk Dr Haron Din.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said so far, three local men, aged in their 50s and 60s, had been detained in Shah Alam and Bandar Utama, Selangor as well as another in Ipoh, Perak for insulting Islam on Facebook and Twitter.
“All were detained following the postings by the Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi on Facebook and Twitter which stepped on the sensitivities of Muslims.
“Following that, several people have also made similar tweets on the social media. We are investigating the matter, we will call him (Jeff Ooi) in, but if he wants it to be easy, I ask him to surrender to the police.
“If not, we will go looking for him,” he told reporters after attending the monthly gathering at Bukit Aman here today.
Khalid also advised politicians to watch their words in their postings on the social media which could hurt the feelings of people of other races and religions.
“Do not shoot your mouth off, think 10 times before posting anything which could hurt the feelings of people of other races and religions. When community leaders like members of Parliament make such comments, their followers will do the same thing without considering other people’s feelings,” he said.
Meanwhile, Director of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said the investigations would be conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for misuse of the social media.
“We will investigate all aspects including the device used to post the statements on the social media,” he said.
“Several more individuals will be detained to help in the investigations into this matter,” he said.
So far, nine police reports have been made on Ooi’s statement which was made on the same day Haron, 76, died at 10.10am (Malaysian time) at the Stanford University Hospital in Sam Francisco, United States from heart complications. -- Bernama
