From pendants to bracelets, wearable tech gets a fashion infusion

FITNESS wearables are pretty dull in their common black rubber and plastic form.

These high-tech wearables provide self fitness data like steps taken, heart beat rate, calorie intake and other sports-related exercise counts, but looks-wise, they just don’t cut it.

So, when US-based fitness wearable maker Fitbit decided to jazz up its line of wearables by collaborating with some renowned fashion houses, the results were simply brilliant.

Funky and top fashion houses like Public School, classy designer Vera Wang and high-class fashion house Tory Burch has given the fitness wearables a refreshing look.

Now you can see them as bangles and pendants and in leather, 22-karat gold or silver. In short, they look stylish and at the same time, record your fitness data.

LOOK GOOD

Fitbit displayed some of its special edition devices at a product showcase in Kuala Lumpur recently.

These include the Special Edition Gold series plus other premium textures and finishes for the Fitbit Alta and Fitbit Blaze devices.

Fitbit Asia Pacific product marketing manager Alexander Healy says the partnership with renowned New York design house Public School has resulted in a collection of premium, urban chic Fitbit Alta accessories.

“We want users to look good with their wearables,” he says.

For example, The Public School accessories elevate the sleek design of Alta by extending the fashion house’s edgy aesthetic to the interchangeable accessory bands.

It has come up with unique concepts, ranging from high-end bracelets inspired by urban spaces to printed sports bands that are at once contemporary and sophisticated.

The first of these design concepts was featured in the Public School Autumn/Winter 2016 Women’s Collection runway show during the recent New York Fashion Week.

Fitbit realises that users want additional ways to wear their trackers so as to fit seamlessly into their day and match their personal style, from the gym and work to a night out and special occasions.

The Public School’s Fitbit Alta series features luxe accessories like soft, premium hide leather bands in graphite and blush pink and hand-polished stainless steel silver and gold bangles.

The Alta Luxe Metal Bangle in hand-polished silver stainless steel pairs with the silver Alta tracker, creating a chic piece of jewellery.

The new Fitbit Charge 2 comes with the special luxe leather collection. The Blaze Special Edition Gold Series includes a premium gold satin-finished stainless steel frame with a slim pink tapered fitness band for those seeking a thinner profile.

Fitbit also showcased a new leisure collection of nylon bands in khaki and olive for its Blaze series.

New to the Fitbit line-up is Simply Vera Vera Wang for Fitbit Alta, a collection inspired by Vera Wang’s signature design philosophy to create classic everyday accessories balancing modern design with elegance.

Available only in the US, it includes Simply Vera Vera Wang for Fitbit Alta Metal Bracelet, a silver-tone metal links with a fold-over clasp that offers a casual, classic chain link style bracelet option for versatile wear.

There is also Simply Vera Vera Wang for Fitbit Alta Double Wrap Leather Bracelet, which features smooth, black or navy genuine leather with silver stone pyramid flanking the tracker and a buckle closure. This style is lightweight for everyday wear.

The fashion line will soon include Tory Burch accessories, which reflect the elegant and classic sensibility that is signature to the designer.

“All these designs show that fitness trackers can be beautiful accessories and at the same time provide vital fitness data via Fitbit apps on smartphones,” says Healy.

The Fitbit Luxe accessories are available here next month, while availability for designs from Public School, Vera Wang and Tory Burch are yet to be known.
